Zalabya , also known as Lugaimat, lokma, or loukoumades, is a renowned Egyptian dessert. These are fried dough balls often soaked in honey syrup and garnished with various toppings.
Yes, long time ago during times of economic stagnation in the middle eastern regions, judges weren't paid in money. Instead, they were given these sweets to satiate their hunger and from that time it's been called the judge’s bite, translates Luqmat al-Qadi and now days it's simply called Zalabya or Zalabia.
The Zalabia dough, made from ingredients like corn starch, flour, and yeast, is fairly neutral in taste. Its delectable flavor arises from the crispy fried exterior and the rosewater-infused honey syrup it's drenched in.
Absolutely! If you're not a fan of syrup, you can opt to roll your Zalabia in confectioners sugar for a sweeter touch.
Zalabiyeh has roots in various cuisines across the Arab world, West Asia, and some European regions influenced by Arab culture. The earliest documented recipe dates back to a 10th-century Arabic cookbook. Originally, the batter was poured through a coconut shell for frying.
While Zalabia is found across the Arab region, Egyptians are particularly renowned for their exceptional take on this dessert. Their version often involves a perfectly fried dough soaked in honey syrup and adorned with a choice of tantalizing toppings.

This is the absolute best when it comes to desserts! My boss brought some Biscoff/cookies n cream/pistachio fried donuts, and they simply melted in my mouth. I must warn you that they are dangerously addictive. They are definitely super sweet but worth indulging to satisfy your sugar craving. I will definitely come by to try other flavours

Such an interesting dessert! Didn't know what it was going to taste like but it was definitely fresh! The dough is constantly being fried and made to order. Crispy on the outside and soft/chewy on the inside. Personally I thought it was a little too crispy on the outside, but it did help with keeping the integrity of the dough as the servers are not skimpy at all with the sauces (we tried salt caramel and dark chocolate, with Bischoff sprinkles). If you're going to try it, be prepared for a lot of sweetness! We even got 2 "filled" with cream cheese (an extra $0.39 per ball) but when we tried them, we couldn't really taste the cream cheese inside...perhaps because they were filled when the zalabyas were super hot (straight out of the fryer) so it just got all melty? Personally I wouldn't try the "filled" ones again.. And overall, It was very rich for us (we got 12 to share between 2 people) so I definitely recommend drinking a lot of water alongside! But otherwise a good experience.

I must say this place is truly the Bomb for a dessert. We had the pack of 34 which were nice and hot. It is amazing when you eat them right there! They are crispy on the outside and soft in the inside. We were 4 of us and still couldn't finish the 34.

They are similar to Mr.puffs and I love the flavors and toppings they offer. They were perfectly crispy on the outside, light and fluffy.
